Homework for April 22

A Cold Coming

In this poem, the author speaks of birth and death. Death is obviously mentioned seeing as how this poem is about war and a soldier, the death of the soldier is talked about. The soldiers last words before his death were about birth. I think the author talks about sperm banks and procreation about the portayal of atrocities of war because he is making the point of how awful war is. It relates to how he disagrees with men putting sperm in sperm banks becuase they may not "make it." I think it is important to know that a poet is being spoken to becuase poets have a very different way of interpreting things, and in a sense twisting words around to make the piece more "musical" in a sense. Poets never just simply say what they feel, they use different figures of speech to always say what they mean to say.

I agree with what you say about choosing a poet. Poets seem to have a way with words and can make even the most depressing image appear inspiring. I also felt that the narrator viewed saving the sperm as a last resort. It shows that even the soldiers were feeling a desperation to survive in some way.

I agree with what you said about the author disagreeing with men saving their sperm in sperm banks because that is looking at the pessimistic side of their situation. Also, I like how you said poets "twist words around to make the piece more 'musical'". I like how you used the word "musical" to explain that the readers won't find it as ghastly and awful as the soldier's own words.

I had the same reaction to this poem. My post was very similar to yours. It was ironic that the soldier was discussing birth when he was on the brink of death.

It is amazing that someone enjoys anything about war, specially the "Iraq war," I wonder why. Honestly war is horrible Lindsay. We might really have different ideas and opinions about and unlike you, I'm allergic to that word.

I agree with you about the poets twisting things around to make things more artistic. In a way its a poet's job to make something terrible less horrible than what it should be.
