January 21, Strategies Notes

-Two different types of reading: leisure and academic-Leisure reading seldom includes poetry or short stories, more novels with a particular kind of story-Our purposes for reading are different which means the way we read is different in each type of reading-Academic assignments are reading for understanding and meaning, more active engagement-Academic reading requires active reading and not passive reading, which is critical thinking and reflecting as one reads-Very engaged in your piece of reading when you read the text for the first time-Types of taking notes:-annotation- easiest and most commonly used, taking notes in the margin of the text (be selective)-skeleton outline- brief, sketchy overview in the margins of a text that are usually turned into an actual outline formsummary- works best with short stories and fiction, a summary is an objective restatement of what you read, the main ideas and points-Very important to note your initial reaction of a text after reading for the first time-Photo collage- a visual representation of your response to the verbal text (brainstorm, bubble web)
